Women’s Watches and Quartz Maintenance

Many women‘s watches are Quartz models. Some believe that Quartz watches don’t require much maintenance, and while that is true, they may, at times require an overhaul. Quartz watches are battery run, and therefore have few moving parts, but like any piece of machinery, they can break down and get dirty. A broken component or excessive build-up are the two major reasons, that your watch may need an overhaul. What is an overhaul and how expensive is it? I’ll answer these questions below:

I. An overhaul is when an experienced watch maker takes your watch apart and inspects it for damage. At this time, a thorough cleaning will remove any build-up, which may be causing problems and any damaged components, will be replaced. The general cost of an overhaul on a Quartz watch is between $70-$90, which does not include the cost of replacement parts.

II. You will know it’s time to take your watch in for an overhaul, if it begins to run through batteries very quickly or is not keeping consistent time. If your watch starts and stops, or gains or looses time…it’s clear that your watch needs an overhaul.

III. If replacement parts are necessary, carefully weigh the original cost of the watch, before moving forward with repairs. Sometimes, it is more cost efficient to replace the piece, rather than repair it.

In any case, always take your watch to an authorized repair center, and have the water resistance retested, after any repair, which requires the case back being removed.
